Meet Cathy Jaggars

Cathy Jaggars was born at Mather AFB Hospital in Sacramento, CA, where her father was stationed.  As a military dependent, she moved frequently with her parents to various duty stations within the US.  They moved to Charleston, SC, in 1966, and her father retired from the Air Force in 1967.

She attended and graduated from Gordon H. Garrett High School in 1969 and from the College of Charleston in 1973.  Immediately following graduation, she entered the U.S. Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant.

During her 20-year military career, she performed a variety of duties, including:

• Communications Center officer in Washington, DC

• Executive Officer of the Woman Marine Company at Headquarters, U.S Marine Corps in Washington, DC

• Administrative Officer for Headquarters Company, Headquarters, U.S Marine Corps in Washington, DC

• Communications duties in units in Okinawa, Japan (with deployments to Korea), and in Tustin, CA

• Officer in Charge of various alcohol and drug treatment programs

• Assistant Head of the U.S. Marine Corps Drug and Alcohol Program in Washington, DC

• Commanding Officer, Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC (final assignment)

 

After retirement from the military in 1993, she and her two children moved to Summerville, SC.  Her first post-retirement employment was at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), as a Staff Development Specialist.  Caught in a Reduction-in-Force (RIF) action at MUSC, she then gained employment in various substance use disorder (SUD) agencies in Summerville, SC, and Greenville, SC.  Having moved to Greenville to help her husband care for his elderly mother, she worked for Pickens County Department of Social Services (DSS) as a treatment case manager and then as a Foster Care Supervisor for Greenville County DSS.  In 2015, she ended her full-time work career and began to serve as a part-time Adjunct Professor in Greenville Technical College’s Human Services Division, while volunteering as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) for Greenville County, representing children who are involved with DSS.

Currently, after relocating to Dorchester County to be near her children and grandchildren, she has continued her volunteer work with the Dorchester County GAL office.
